What is tempered glass?

Tempered glass
for maximum
safety.

Tempered glass — also known as thermally tempered glass or thermally toughened glass — is produced by heating flat glass to approximately 620 °C and then rapidly cooling it. This thermal tempering process creates compressive stresses at the surface that quadruple the breaking strength compared to ordinary glass.

When broken, tempered glass shatters into small, blunt granules with no sharp edges — conforming to EN 12150, the standard for safety glazing in construction and architectural projects. GIGAglas supplies tempered glass in standard and oversized formats up to 24 m in length via our partner network of manufacturers.

Why GIGAglas
for tempered glass?

Through direct factory partnerships we supply tempered safety glass that is simply not available through conventional glass merchants — in terms of size, quality and price.

Oversized formats up to 24 m

We supply tempered glass in panels up to 24 m in length — suitable for iconic facades, noise barriers and large roof structures that far exceed standard sizes.

Curved tempered glass

Single and double curved tempered glass for architectural applications. We combine the tempering process with bending for complex curvilinear facades and roofs.

Partner factories

GIGAglas has extensive buying relationships with certified manufacturers worldwide. As a wholesaler, this translates into competitive prices and short lead times for you.

Custom work to specification

Exact dimensions, thickness, edge work, holes and coatings — we manufacture to your technical drawing. No compromises on specification, even for large series.

Technical support

From standard interpretation (EN 12150, EN 1863) to logistics advice for oversized transport — our team guides you from specification to delivery on site.

Applications

Where is
tempered glass
used?

Tempered safety glass is the backbone of modern architecture — from high-rise facades to infrastructure. GIGAglas delivers for a wide range of sectors and project types.

Facade glazing
Structural and non-structural glass facades for high-rise, utility buildings and offices. Oversized panels for minimal profiles and maximum light admission.
Balustrades & parapets
Fall and impact-resistant glazing conforming to NEN 6702 and TRAV. Extra-clear tempered glass for balconies, terraces, stairwells and visually open parapets.
Noise barriers on motorways
Heat-strengthened and tempered glass for noise barriers along motorways and rail lines. We have delivered more than 100,000 m² for infrastructure projects in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
Roof glazing & skylights
Safety-glazed roof glass conforming to NEN-EN 14019. Tempered glass as part of a laminated system build-up for skylights, glass roofs and conservatories.
Retail & interior display
Showroom and retail glazing where safety and transparency go hand in hand. Tempered glass for display cases, floor constructions, tables and design interiors.
Outdoor & infrastructure
Bus shelters, advertising masts, canopies and outdoor installations. Tempered glass withstands wind loads, thermal shock and vandalism pressure in outdoor environments.
